Background
In my previous career, I cooked professionally for eight years in a variety of food service operations, which ranged from quick service to fine dining. Throughout this career, I trained new staff and created training materials when none existed. I worked closely with chefs and owners during leadership changes, providing support wherever I could. I created solutions to problems that held back our productivity and efficiency. I witnessed the challenges leaders face in acquiring and retaining skilled workers, managing employee conflict, sustaining morale, and fostering an effective work environment. External challenges, such as a chronic shortage of job applicants, combined with internal challenges, like high turnover, were a constant struggle across the places I worked in the culinary industry. I saw that many leaders wanted to address issues within their teams and organizations, but were stumped by overwork and a lack of support and resources. I eventually came to realize that, as much as I loved to cook, my true passion lay in these organizational development challenges.
Industrial-organizational psychology is the study of human behavior in the workplace. The goal is to create effective strategies for improving the work environment and employee performance. For my degree in this field, I studied leadership, executive coaching, consulting skills, complex change, conflict management, organizational development, organizational behavior, psychometric tests and measures, research methods, talent acquisition, and learning and development.
I chose to create an NPO instead of an LLC because I am mission-driven to make organizational development accessible to small businesses that often operate on narrow financial margins. I believe that making the kind of support I offer available to business that would not otherwise be able to afford it can significantly improve the working lives of employees and employers across a wide array of industries.
Purpose
My purpose is to help leaders identify their authentic leadership style, develop effective leadership strategies, feel more confident in their roles, identify challenges they and their teams face, and work through those challenges to find effective solutions. Performance and well-being are negatively impacted by work stress, interpersonal conflict, and feeling inauthentic to oneself. These forces are often embedded in our everyday working lives. As a result, it can be difficult to step back from the immediate situation and find the perspective one needs in order to develop a new approach. I help clients tackle personal and organizational challenges by guiding them through a process of reflection and discovery. I offer a confidential, non-judgmental, safe space for clients to work through any issues they would like to address.
Approach
When I work with clients, I seek to help them create their own solutions. There are many ways to approach challenges in the workplace, and different approaches work best for different people. We are most effective when we work with our strengths and are authentic to ourselves. Our work together should therefore be a partnership of equals, wherein you feel empowered to decide how best to approach your goals and challenges. We will use workshops, in which I will share knowledge on a variety of organizational behavior and development topics. In addition, I have designed surveys that can be used to anonymously collect valuable data about how your employees experience their work environment. This data can be extremely useful for identifying the source of workplace issues. Together, these strategies will provide clarity and a sense of direction. During our sessions, you will be able to develop clear goals and a plan of action.
Guiding Principles
Empathy | Empathy is a critical skill in the workplace. The ability to understand and relate to the experiences of colleagues allows us to build strong relationships that support higher levels of engagement and reduce burnout. Empathy is instrumental to resolving conflict in the workplace, and can help to avoid conflict in the first place.
Responsibility | My definition of workplace responsibility incorporates self-awareness (how am I thinking and behaving), conscientiousness (what impact am I having on others), accountability (how do I handle my mistakes), and hard work (rising to the demands and challenges of my role). Showing up fully to our responsibilities is a great way to boost self-efficacy and esteem.
Authenticity | In any role, we function best when we are true to ourselves. Therefore, it is important to understand our individual needs, skills, interpersonal styles, values, and goals. Unfortunately, there are many forces that can get in the way of becoming our authentic selves. Some are external, while others exist only in our own minds. My goal is to help you sort through these forces and bring your authentic self to the surface.
